Standing on the 12th tee on Sunday, Alejandro Gonzalez wasn’t chasing the tournament lead, he was chasing the tournament record. Sitting at 8-under par for the tournament (and 3-under for the day), Gonzalez needed two more birdies to tie the LoneStar Boys Invitational tournament record, set last year by his friend, Ryan Goldfarb, who shot 10-under-par to capture the 2018 title.
While he wasn’t quite able to reach Goldfarb’s record (Gonzalez finished the day at 2-under and 7-under for the tournament), he still cruised to victory, his first major victory on the Texas Junior Golf Tour. Gonzalez was solid all weekend, making only a single bogey for the tournament, and doing most of his damage on the front nine each day, making a total of 6 birdies on the first 9 holes compared to no bogeys. He also played the most difficult stretch of holes – Nos. 16-18 – even par each day.
Gonzalez’ two-day total of 67-70=137 (7-under) was good enough for a 2-shot lead over Austin’s Shoichiro Kato, who was the only other player to shoot under par each day. Shreveport’s Payne Johnson, who was play his college golf at Texas State next fall, finished third at 3-under for the weekend, and a trio of boys finished T4 at 2-over – Joshua’s Kyle Yuan, Arkansas’ Phisher Phillips and Houston’s Tyler Gardner.
