The TJGT 2009-2010 season came to an end this evening at Sienna Plantation Golf Club in Missouri City Texas, although you couldn’t tell the players that.

Players were greeted on day one at check in with gifts that included an Adidas shirt and a matching logoed TJGT camouflage cap.  Players were also treated to a boxed lunch both days as well as all the water they could drink, compliments of the Texas Junior Golf Tour.  There were three college coaches in attendance to watch the thirty six-hole event.  Those coaches included the Jackson State head women’s coach, University of Houston assistant coach Chris Hill, and University of Houston Head Coach Jonathan Dismuke.

The action was much like the weather…HOT.  On day one, the boys got off to a rockin’ start.  Hometown favorite Doug Shipman of Houston used his home…

TWO GREAT EVENTS ON THREE INCREDIBLE COURSES!

image
Two great events on three incredible courses. With this being the last week of summer break before most players head back to school it was a great opportunity to take advantage of the high level of competition on challenging courses before gearing up for high school golf. The TGJT had two events going on, The TJGT Gleneagles Country Club Junior Championship in Dallas and The TJGT Slick Rock-Escondido Championship down near Austin. The TJGT would also like to say good luck to all of the junior golfers trying out for their high school team in the upcoming weeks.

First up the TJGT Gleneagles Country Club Junior Championship was played at Gleneagles Country Club on The Kings Course August 16th -17th 2010. Coaches from UNT and…

Red Hot at Redstone!

image
The TJGT Redstone Junior Classic was played August 2-3 2010 at the Redstone Country Club in Houston, Texas.

Wow! Scorching hot is an understatement! It was hot at the Shell Houston Open’s Redstone Country Club Tournament Course. Regardless of the heat, the kids were throwing darts all over the place. Nicole Budnik (hole # 14) and Kari Rosser (hole # 9) fired aces on day one. Rarely has the TJGT had aces in the same tournament let alone the same pairing as Nicole and Kari were in the same foursome when their aces occurred.

Several college coaches from the great state of Texas were in attendance watching the 116 player field with the Boys 12-18 playing 6,798 yards and the Girls 12-18 playing 5,768 yards in this 36-hole, Golfweek-ranked event.

In their last competitive rounds as TJGT combatants, Lamar Consolidated teammates go their separate ways with another 1-2 finish.

Katelyn McDougal changed her school colors from blue to red as she leaves Lamar Consolidated high school for the friendly walls of Lamar University, and once again pounced on her girls 16-18 division with an awesome 70-69 2 day score.

Katelyn’s high school teammate, and soon to be St. Edwards college golfer, Ryanne Haddow, fired a nice 73-76, to finish second.

On a personal note from TJGT Houston TD Coach Handley, “These two girls are exactly the kind of girls all of our youngsters should look up to. For four years, I have watched these two…

The Tribute and The Woodlands

The Texas Junior Golf Tour once again had a triple threat Monday and Tuesday.  In the Dallas area, the tour hosted the Galleria-Dallas Classic at the Tribute located in the Colony, Texas.  This course was designed after the home of golf, the famous St. Andrews course in Ireland, and what a treat it was for the young men and women to play this venue so soon after the British Open was hosted at St. Andrews this year.  In the Houston area, the tour hosted two events on the same course.  The Woodlands Resort & Conference Center played host to the Woodlands Panther Trails Junior Championship as well as the Elite Mini Tour’s The Woodlands Panther Trails Mini Tour Championship.  The story of each event was weather!  On the first day in the Woodlands, play was suspended twice, and then finally halted due to inclement weather that rolled through the area.  On day two, players pressed hard to finish the first round, and then played eighteen more holes as the weather hit again at about 1 pm.  The Dallas area was not immune to the inclement weather either.  Players were faced with about a two hour rain delay that made the first round last approximately seven hours.  The staff of high school golf coaches at each venue was able to help all players finish the events.

TJGT players make Golfweek’s Honor Roll

golfweek_players
Recent TJGT winners, Thomas Birdsey (Trophy Club, TX - Class of 2010) and Emily Collins (Colleyville, TX - Class of 2010), earn “Player of the Week” Honors from Golfweek.

One can argue that the only thing hotter than the Texas heat right now is Thomas Birdsey’s golf game. The recent high school graduate, who will be attending Kansas State in the fall, fired a sizzling 68 in the final round of the Allen Samuels Cowboys Jr. Championship to claim back-to-back TJGT titles. Birdsey also birdied his final hole on at the TPC Las Colinas (PGA Tour course and site of the HP Byron Nelson Championship) to win the TPC Four Seasons Invitational by one shot.
