Wild Weather at the TJGT Wilderness Challenge
The TJGT Wilderness Challenge was played May 15th-165th at The Wilderness Golf Course in Lake Jackson.
The Boys 16-18 played 6,783 yards; the Boys 12-15 played 6,303 yards; and all Girls 12-18 played 5,740 yards in this 36-hole, nationally-ranked event that had an international flavor with players from Texas and China.
The Wilderness TJGT players weathered a spring thunderstorm of 1.7 inches of rain over a 24 hour period. Multiple players were able to shine thru the overcast Saturday round to post quality scores. Well over half the field was able to post a sub 80 score on the rain soaked track. With the sun shining bright, the humidity high, Sunday was set for a steamy finale. Red faced and dripping sweat, sums up the scoring tables. Players, parents and staff watched some tremendous play this weekend.
In the boys 16-18 field Eric Redeke r(72-73-145) of Katy, TX wins on the first playoff hole over Weslaco’s Garrison Lackey (71-74-145). Scott Newell(69-79-148) takes 3rd place by default, due to Juan Gonzalez (71-77-148) leaving to catch a flight home to McAllen.
In the boys 12-15 field Austin Duhon (71-75-146) took first over Taylor MacKay(74-74-148). Carson Scitern (73-76-149) wins 3rd place.
In the girls 12-15 field Lakareber Abe (75-79-154) defended her home turf this weekend, by defeating 2nd place Cheyenne Knight (82-79-163).
In the girls 16-18 field Catherine “Knee High” Herrera (72-77-149) finally broke through to her first victory. She overtook Tezira Abe and Vanessa Johnson.
