A TJGT Tradition-The Traditions Invitational at Texas A&M
The TJGT Traditions Invitational was played at the Traditions @ Texas A&M golf course on December 5th-6th 2009 in cold and rainy weather. The Boys 12-18 played 6,955 yards and the Girls 12-18 5,920 yards in this 36-hole, Golfweek-ranked event.
College coaches from USTA, Texas A&M, TCU, Liberty, Baylor, and Hill College were there watching the best junior golfers in the region from Mexico, Illinois, Arkansas, Missouri, Louisiana, Kansas, Texas battle it out on a course designed to test even the best of golfers. Traditions will host both NCAA Men’s 2010 Regional and the Women’s 2011 NCAA Championship.
Once again players and parents were privy to a Q & A but this time with a special twist. Not only were college coaches available to answer questions but three former TJGT players who are playing college golf were there to share as well. Parents and players were able to ask questions on what it was like as college golfer, school, education, workouts, practice schedule, and qualifying.
Finally, once again the always famous Davis Family Bar-B-Cue was held at the Texas A&M team facility and all participants and families were able to visit and tour the facilities as well as the campus
On Friday night over 175 players and parents attended the Texas A&M basketball game and had a great time watching the Aggies defeat Akron 72-64.
On the course 109 players battled the bitter cold weather on Saturday and that really uncomfortable cold wet weather on Sunday. These were certainly days that could test any golfer’s mental toughness as well as their physical ability. The players were held in check early by a long lasting bit of frost on Saturday, but as play began, it was clear that the golf course was only hibernating a bit before setting its dastardly cold wet grip on the players. While the golf course won most of the skirmishes over the 36-hole event, there were plenty of bright spots for the kids.
In the boys division Air Force signee (alma mater of TJGT President Dave Jones) Phillip Colwell took first place with a spectacular 1-under par effort, while Tyler Dunlap (+3) held off Brian Bullington (+5) for 2nd.
In the girls division Sierra Sims ran away on the second day for a 3-shot victory over Chaney Uhles. Portland Rosen (University of Virginia) , Courtney Ferguson, and Ryanne Haddow (St. Edwards) played off for 3rd with Ms. Haddow surviving the playoff.
