TJGT Bear Country Boys & Girls Championships

image
The Texas Junior Golf Tour kicked off its 2011-2012 season by hosting the Bear Country Girls Championship on September 10-11, 2011 at Cottonwood Creek Golf Club in Waco.  Cottonwood Creek is home of the nationally famous Starburst Junior Championship held annually each June and is also the host site for the Region II-5A tournament.  Twenty-eight girls from Texas and Mexico competed in the event with all girls playing from the red tees at a distance of 5,716 yards.

On day one, players were greeted at check in with both registration gifts and tee gifts.  For their registration gift, each player was given a cinch back pack, a package of 5 TJGT wrist bands (similar to the Lance Armstrong ‘Livestrong’ bracelet), a TJGT lanyard, a golf towel, and a TJGT bag tag.  For the tee gifts, each player was given a TJGT tee shirt and a dozen Titlesist PROV1 or PROV1X golf balls.  Play on day one started with tee times at ten o’clock.  Players were met with cool, dry weather for the first round.  Maggie Byers from San Antonio got off to a fast start on day one shooting an opening round 73.  She recorded an amazing…

TJGT ADJUSTS AGE DIVISIONS AND LAUNCHES NEW FALL QUALIFIER SERIES!

image

The TJGT has listened to the numerous college coaches recruiting the tour the past two years and along with the upcoming major changes to the AJGA Performance Based Entry System, the tour will adjust the age divisions and create a special qualifier series for entry into certain tournaments that could be affected by the new change in the AJGA PBE system.
The new AJGA PBE system will now eliminate tournament exemptions and move strictly to performance stars.  The details of the new system are yet to be released, but the new requirement for a minimum of 40 boys and 12 girls in the field/division will be new AJGA criteria for any junior tour to award PBE for each individual tournament.  As details become available on the new AJGA PBE system, rest assured we will inform you as soon as we…

TJGT Alumni Shine at US Amateur Finals/Kraft Wins Championship

image
The final match of the 2011 US Amateur Championship featured two former TJGT players, Kelly Kraft of Denton Texas and his caddy Boston Britain, and was won by Kraft after he defeated the #2 ranked amateur in the world, Patrick Cantlay, 2-up.  Kelly graduated in 2008 and finished his college career at SMU. Kelly finished a stellar collegiate career at SMU earning both All-Conference and All-American honors.  Boston and Kelly were childhood golf partners and played many TJGT events together so caddying for him is a natural fit.  “I always knew watching Kelly on the tour and through high school that he would be a great player. He went under the radar as a junior but his work ethic and desire to win always set him apart.” Dave Jones stated.

The TJGT also had two additional former players in the eight-man quarter final field, Jordan Spieth and…

The TJGT TPC San Antonio Major Championship

image
The TJGT TPC San Antonio Major Championship was played August 15th-17th, 2011 at the incredible JW Marriot/TPC San Antonio Resort, home of the PGA Tour’s Valero Texas Open. Players played both the Canyons and Oaks courses with all boys playing 6,622 yards on the Canyons and 6,624 yards on the Oaks, and all girls playing 5,609 and 5,514 yards on the Canyons and Oaks, respectively.

Just under 100 players from Texas, Louisiana, and Mexico teed it up in hot and humid weather in front of college coaches from UTSA. This 54-hole event was yet another Golfweek-ranked event the TJGT puts on.

The golfers enjoyed three great days of golf on two professional golf courses, hosts of both the AT&T Seniors Championship and the PGA Valero Texas Open in 2011.  On the Canyons course there were great scores on day one, and with wide fairways and perfect greens, the putts were dropping.  Val Almendarez led the way with a one under par 71 to lead the boy’s competition and Courtney Dow shot a one over 73 to lead the girls.  The Oaks Course on days two and three proved…
