The TJGT got the 2008-2009 season underway with the Capital City Kickoff played at Falconhead Golf Course in Lake Travis, Texas.
Although the second day had temperatures almost ten degrees cooler than day one, the first day saw weather that was extremely HOT with little to no breeze, and temperatures that topped out at 103*. Combine that with a golf course with many elevation changes and protected greens with more than their share of undulation, and you have a very challenging venue.
The Boys 16-18 played 7,003 yards, the 12-25 Boys played 6,316 yards, and all girls played 5,711 yards.
Here’s how things shaped up on the course:
Boys 16-18
Austin’s Paul Campbell shot 75-74 and overtook first-round leader Alex Ellis who had seven birdies in his opening round 72, to take home the title. Daniel Northington shot 75-77 and claimed third place.
Boys 12-15
Daniel De La Garza making the trip up from Monterrey, Mexico ran off a string of 4 consecutive birdies on the front side on day one and then carded 5 birdies on day two in route to a 68, which was the only under-par round of the tournament. His two day total of 143 was seven better than Trevis Loree (San Antonio, TX) who shot 74-75-149 and fellow countryman Polo Lopez (Monterrey, Mexico) who posted scores of 75-74-149. Trevis took 2nd via a 2-hole playoff.
Girls 16-18
We saw lots of good golf with the top three all being Austin residents. Alex Rossi posted scores 75-74-149 to take the title over Kaylin Terry who shot 74-77-151. Third place went to Chelsea Brechter who shot matching 76’s and a two-day total of 152.
Girls 12-15
No change in the leader board between the first and second rounds with Haley Haught (Austin,TX) shooting 83-83-165 to take the top spot. She was followed by Christine Campbell (Austin, TX) 90-87-177 and Maty Monzingo (Ennis,TX) 92-87-179.
