The TJGT TPC San Antonio Major Championship was played August 15th-17th, 2011 at the incredible JW Marriot/TPC San Antonio Resort, home of the PGA Tour’s Valero Texas Open. Players played both the Canyons and Oaks courses with all boys playing 6,622 yards on the Canyons and 6,624 yards on the Oaks, and all girls playing 5,609 and 5,514 yards on the Canyons and Oaks, respectively.
Just under 100 players from Texas, Louisiana, and Mexico teed it up in hot and humid weather in front of college coaches from UTSA. This 54-hole event was yet another Golfweek-ranked event the TJGT puts on.
The golfers enjoyed three great days of golf on two professional golf courses, hosts of both the AT&T Seniors Championship and the PGA Valero Texas Open in 2011. On the Canyons course there were great scores on day one, and with wide fairways and perfect greens, the putts were dropping. Val Almendarez led the way with a one under par 71 to lead the boy’s competition and Courtney Dow shot a one over 73 to lead the girls. The Oaks Course on days two and three proved to be a greater challenge as the players tried to tackle a PGA venue. Day two saw Hunter Zetsche bounce back with a field best 72 and Courtney Dow once again led the girls besting her day one score with a 72 on day two. Day three saw Mitchell Meissner leapfrog his way up the leader board with a field best one under 71 finishing in 5th place. Courtney Dow stayed steady shooting a 74 to win the girls division by a massive 14 shots that was capped by her four birdies on the back nine in the final round. On the boys side Val Almendarez started strong on day one and remained consistently steady with back-to-back 76’s to capture the Boys Championship. In the end birdies were hard to come by but the players did a great job working their way around the course handling the narrow fairways and undulated greens.
