The TJGT Allen Samuels Barton Creek Holiday Classic was played at the beautiful Barton Creek Resort on the Crenshaw and Fazio Golf Courses on December 28th-30th, 2009. This Golfweek-ranked event was shortened from 54 to 36-holes due to some crazy, non-seasonal weather that resulted in giving the players a day off between rounds. The playing conditions can be summed up in two words- cold and wet.
Close to 200 players from 8 states and 4 countries teed it up in this very elite event with the Boys 16-18 playing 6,630 yards; the Boys 12-15 playing 6,290 yards; and all Girls playing a collegiate yardage of 5,900 yards.
This is the favorite event of the year for many parents, players and coaches alike for several different reasons starting with the incredible facilities and breath-taking views. One of the highlights of the event for many parents and players was the Q&A on Monday night with Golfweek magazine’s Lance Ringler , a former college coach and the guy behind the Golfweek rankings, and the college coach Q&A on Tuesday night that included Lance and his wife Missy, the women’s coach at UNLV, along with coaches from Wichita State, Vanderbilt, and Bowling Green just to name a few.
As a parent or a player you cannot place a dollar amount on the value you get when you have access to some of the top college golf coaches all in one room sharing the in’s and out’s of playing college golf.
As a matter of fact here’s just a sampling of some of the schools that were represented at the Holiday Classic:
Liberty, Rogers State University, Southwestern, Vanderbilt, Lubbock Christian, Bowling Green, UNLV, Hardin Simmons, Houston Baptist, University of Texas, and Wichita State.
On the course Day 1 was cold and sunny as the temperatures ranged from 39 to 51. Both of the golf courses were in great shape as the greens were extremely fast. Day 2 was cancelled due to inclement weather with lots of rain and sleet while temperatures stayed in the 30’s all day. Day 3 got off to a cold, foggy, and wet start but the sun broke through around noon making for prime golfing weather with 6 rounds under par. **Girls 12-15 – Maggie Byers defeated Taylor Coleman with a Par on the third Playoff hole to capture third place.
*Girls 16-18 – Talia Campbell defeated Taylor Moreno on the fourth hole of the playoff with a birdie to capture the girl’s title. Also, in the Girls 16-18 Mariah Montoya defeated Christina Cantu and Laura Deleonardis to capture third place on the third playoff hole with a par.
