Sponsored in part by Nike Golf

Once again it was a busy weekend on the TJGT with three events spread out across the state being played simultaneously on January 10-11 2009.

First up is the Austin District Preview which was played at Falcon Head Golf Course. The Boys 16-18 played 6,855 yards; Boys 12-15 played 6,316 yards; and all Girls played 5,745 yards. The weather was cold and windy on Saturday with temperatures below 50 and the winds blowing 30-35 mph with gust to 40 mph.  Sunday was colder but the winds died down to 5-10 mph.
Once again there were college coaches in attendance at this 36-hole, nationally-ranked event.

On the course local Brenden Redfern took the top honors in the Boys 16-18 but youngster Daniel De La Garza may have stolen the show. The Boys 16-18 saw playoff action for 2nd place as Alex Ellis birdied the first playoff hole to clip Daniel De La Garza.  Little Daniel De La Garza playing up in the Boys 16-18 gave plenty of fireworks on his closing back nine of 3 under par 33.  Daniel made 3 putts over 50 feet and holed out from 100 yards to make a run for the title.  Daniel had 6 birdies on the day including 5 on the back nine and a streak of 4 in a row on holes 13-16.

Saturday saw nasty & cold weather with 30 mph gusts and a wind chill in the low-20’s, Sunday it warmed up throughout the day with 15 mph winds.
Lots of great golf on a very challenging track. Here’s how things shaped up after 36-holes of nationally-ranked golf:

To quote Tournament Director Matt Glenn, “This was a great event!!!”

Last but not least we have the Upland Energy Open played on the Blackhorse South Course.

The Boys 16-18 played 6,642 yards; the Boys 12-15 played 6,391 yards; and all Girls 12-18 played 5,706 yards in yet another 36-hole, nationally-ranked event. The weather was cold and windy both days, not what you expect for Houston weather. College coaches were in attendance as well.

Stinging cold wind hampered the entire tournament. Austin Green put up a 1 under par score of 71 on a bitterly cold day Sunday to pull past his competitors by 3 strokes. 2014 grad Peter Thorseth kicked off his TJGT career with a nice win over a strong 12-1t5 boys field. Peter’s 155 total bested Tyler Thomas by 1 stroke. A putting contest on the 36th green was the deciding factor in the end.

Rachel Mulkey came down from the Dallas area to compete with a really strong field of girls to take the top spot with a 2-day score of 161.
