As we transition from summer to fall, it was another great TJGT “Triple-Header” weekend with three events across the state.
First up the TJGT Kingwood Forest Junior Championship was played at Kingwood Country Club on the Forest Course September 24th-25th down near Houston, Texas. The Boys 16-18 played 6,758 yards; the Boys 12-15 played 6,307 yards; and all Girls 12-18 played 5,850 yards in this 36-hole, nationally-ranked event.
According to Jeff Bellnap, the Kingwood HS Golf Coach, legend has it that the Kingwood CC Forest course was originally denied a course rating by the USGA due to the difficulty and perceived unfairness of the course. Tight fairways lined with encroaching hazards, natural waste areas, pot bunkers, grass bunkers and large amounts of mounding might have a little something to do with that legend. Of course the kids also had to deal with high winds and tough pin locations for the Kingwood Junior Championship.
Steven Schmulson was able to hold off Austin Wagner for 1st place in the Boys 12-14 division while Luke Smith was able to secure a 3rd place finish in a playoff over George Gilbert.
Kelly McGovern ran away with the girls 15-18 division with recent Lamar University signee Taylor Stockton claiming a distant 2nd. Jaquiline Rusheon was able to claim 3rd.
On day 1, no one wanted to lay claim to the boys 15-18 division as multiple solid players succumbed to the legend that is the Kingwood Forest Golf Course. Jake McCrory’s 77 was able to eek out a slim lead over Dylan Reynolds’ 78 and a plethora of players at 79. In the end, McCrory was able to hold off late charges by Will Bevivino who finished 2nd, Cody Davis, Mason Raine and Marcus Bennett who all tied for 3rd place with Cody taking 3rd place in a playoff.
