ANOTHER BUSY WEEKEND ON THE TJGT!

Sponsored in part by Nike Golf

It was another busy weekend on the TJGT with two Big Tour events and one Mini-Tour event being played.

The Castle Hills Classic was played January 24th-25th 2009 at The Golf Club at Castle Hills with the Boys 16-18 playing 6,607 yards, the Boys 12-15 playing 6,191 yards, and all Girls playing 5,481 yards, in this 36-hole, nationally-ranked event. College coaches were in attendance scouting the competition. The weather was a test with cold and windy conditions on Saturday, and a very cold start on Sunday.  Combine the weather with the course (which has hosted numerous USGA qualifiers) and these players were extremely challenged. We saw one playoff in the Boys 12-15 where we had four players tied at 155. Logan McKown won a two hole playoff the claim 2nd place.
The other three players in the playoff were Kirk Thomas II, Justin Newby (Allen) and Austin Fuller (Edmond OK).  Newby and Fuller were out of the playoff on the first hole and Logan beat Kirk on the second hole.

Played in conjunction with the Castle Hills Classic was the Castle Hills Mini Tour Classic. The final Mini-Tour event of the season before the Tour Championship saw the Boys 12-13 playing 5,700 yards, the Boys & Girls 11-12 playing 5,400 yards, and the Boys & Girls 8-9 playing 3,900 yards in this nationally-ranked event.

Final mini-tour event before the tour championship saw some great golf in extreme weather conditions.  Johnny Jones and Weston Hunt dueled to the end with Jones nipping Hunt by a stroke.  In the boys 10-11 division, Ryan Grider fires two very impressive rounds of 77, which is outstanding in the conditions.  In the boys 8-9 division, Joseph Jones wins the trophy by virtue of firing a personal best 93 on Sunday.  In the girls division there was some outstanding golf played by all the girls.  Macy Holliday wins the 8-9 year old division after shooting rounds 83-88.  You should see this girl’s putting stroke! In the girls 10-11, Courtney Dow wins the event with very impressive scores of 85-82, while Mackenzie Matthews takes second with rounds of 108-103.  The girls braved the tough conditions on Saturday to finish the round. They showed a lot of heart and character playing in those conditions.

The weather was cold and windy on first day, but we managed to finish just before darkness.  Day two was still cold in the early morning, but less breezy.  Lots of scarves, gloves, and hot coffee.  Never saw the sun in two days!

In the Boys 16-18 Kevin Foley chipped in on the first playoff to win over Juan Espiga for 3rd place in the Boys 16-18 Division.  Connor Black parred the first playoff hole as he continues to bully the older boys for 1st place over Jimmy Elliott.

Tyler Thomas of Beaumont denied Peter Thorseth a 2nd win in a row with a 5 shot victory in the boys 12-15.

Courtney Ferguson held off Ryanne Haddow and Hannah Arnold to claim the girls 16-18 title.
