The TJGT Cypresswood Junior Championship was played at the Cypresswood Golf Club on the Cypress Course November 19th-20th 2011.

The players teed it up under partly cloudy skies and near perfect scoring conditions at the Cypresswood - Cypress Course this weekend. While several players battled internal demons from inside 15-feet, others were forced to battle father time as the sun proved to be a formidable opponent for all the late tee times.

The Boys 16-18 played 6,906 yards; the Boys 12-15 played 6,238 yards; and all Girls 12-18 played 5,714 yards in this 36-hole, nationally-ranked event.

Coaches from Houston Baptist and Schreiner University were in attendance watching the players from Texas and Louisiana battle it out.

Barrett Hennington and Phillip Stewart had their own battle going on in the Boys 15-18 division as they were paired together for both rounds of the two-day event. Round 1 saw Barrett fire 68, while Phillip closed with a 33 on the back nine for a 69. Round 2 saw both players take a few steps back, but Phillip Stewart eventually held on for the 3-shot win over Barrett. Local favorite, Lonnie Smith was solid enough to claim 3rd place.

Patrick Rhodes claimed 1st place in the boys 12-14 division by firing a +3 147. Kyle Hogan took 2nd while Cole Hammer’s 33 on the front 9 of day two was…

Inside the tougher academic requirements for freshmen from NCAA.org

image
Changes to the academic requirements for incoming Division I student-athletes will require freshmen to meet a tougher academic standard to compete in the first year of enrollment at a Division I institution.

The changes, approved last month by the Division I Board of Directors, represent a philosophical shift in the way the NCAA examines academic credentials. The new philosophy will require student-athletes enrolling in August 2015 and later to meet a higher academic standard to compete in the first year. Student-athletes who meet the current initial eligibility standard will be eligible for aid and practice only.  Read the full article posted on ncaa.org here.
