The TJGT Sooner Junior Major Championship

image class=
The Texas Junior Golf Tour travelled across the Red River this past weekend into the Sooner Nation to host the Sooner Junior Major Championship.  The event was held at the fabulous Jimmie Austin Golf Club in Norman, Oklahoma.  Jimmie Austin Golf Club was the host site for the 2009 USGA Public Links Championship and has hosted several prestigious college events over the years.  91 players representing Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Washington, Arkansas, Missouri, California, and Mexico played this fantastic layout, with the boys playing from 6, 675 yards and the girls playing from 5,602 yards.  The night before the event, all players were allowed to have a great Q & A session with Gregg Grost.  On day one players were greeted at check in with some outstanding tee gifts that included a Golfsmith gift card, a Nike golf shirt, a satchel, a cap, and a dozen Titleist ProV1 golf balls.  If only the weather had been as nice as the gifts!  As players were checking in, Norman was deluged with over two and half inches of rain making the course unplayable and forcing the cancellation of the first round.  The down time allowed for the players to have an off day.  Some of the players were able to take in a movie, some drove further north to Oklahoma City to find a place to practice golf, while others just relaxed and enjoyed the college football that was on television.

Day two saw the rain dissipate overnight and give way to sunny skies.  It was a beautiful day for golf with temperatures in the high 70’s and only a…

Former OU coach Gregg Grost shares tonight at TJGT Sooner Junior Major

image
Former OU coach and Executive Director of the Golf Coaches Association of America Gregg Grost shared from his vast wealth of knowledge tonight with the TJGT players and parents. Only on the TJGT do you have access to 100’s of years of college coaching experience through events like this and the TJGT’s College Bound Membership.

If a junior player is serious about playing college golf at any level, then the TJGT is the place to be.

Grost, who coached at OU from 1986 to 2000, led the Sooners to a school-record seven tournament victories in 1989, including the NCAA Championship, and was named the Dave Williams National Coach of the Year.

He also led Oklahoma to the 1992 Big Eight Championship and was named conference coach of the year.

Grost began his coaching career in 1981 at Lamar University.  He was named Southland Conference Coach of the Year in 1983 and 1985 while leading the Cardinals…

The TJGT Falconhead Mini Tour Junior Championship was played at the Falconhead Golf Course October 16th-17th 2010 in sunny, perfect weather.
Yardage played per age group (I don’t need slope or rating): The Boys 12-13 played 5,800 yards; the Boys/Girls 10-11 played 5,100 yards; and the Boys 8-9 played 5,000 yards in this 36-hole, nationally-ranked event.

TJGT Region III Preview and Falconhead Junior Championship

The TJGT Houston 5A - Regional 3 Preview was played at Eagle Pointe Golf Club in Houston, Texas with the Boys 16-18 played 6,851 yards; the Boys 12-15 played 6,851 yards; and all Girls 12-18 played 5,754 yards in this 36-hole nationally-ranked event that was played October 16-17, 2010.

Houston’s weather in October, as good as it gets. Players from Texas, Louisiana, Mexico teed it up as blue skies and near perfect temperatures gave way to some great golf as many new faces began popping up on the TJGT.

Caitlyn Cassity staked her claim as the regions player to beat after the departure of several top notch girls golfers into the college ranks from last season. Her solid 76 1st round was followed by a perfect 71 2nd round to easily step up to the top of the leaderboard. Cecilie Nordahl of Katy Raquel Trevino of Pasadena and Lauren Boone of Houston, just couldn’t muster enough charge at the end to pressure the…

Oklahoma State Head Coach Mike McGraw to be guest speaker at Red River Shootout October 30-31st

image
Oklahoma State Head Coach Mike McGraw will be the guest speaker at Red River Shootout October 30-31st at the historic Dornick Hills Golf & Country Club in Ardmore, Oklahoma. The Red River Shootout places the best player from the TJGT against the best players from the Oklamhoma Junior Tour in an unique team format.

In five seasons as the head coach at Oklahoma State, Mike McGraw has undoubtedly left his mark on one of the nation’s proudest programs.

In 2010, McGraw narrowly missed leading the Cowboys to their second national title under his direction. OSU’s runner-up showing at the NCAA Championship brought to a close a successful campaign that produced five victories. The Cowboys also finished the season as the nation’s top-ranked squad for the second consecutive year. Among the squad’s wins was a fourth consecutive Big 12 title that saw McGraw named the league’s coach of the year for the fourth-straight time.

McGraw also oversaw five medalists and three of his players achieved All-America status.

OSU has now won 21 times overall with McGraw at the helm. Additionally, 23 individual medalists have been crowned under his watch.

The 2008-09 season saw the Cowboys win five times. OSU was impressive in victory, winning four times by double-digit totals. Overall, McGraw’s squad won by an average of…
