The Woodlands Panther Trails Mini Tour Championship

The Texas Junior Golf Tour’s Elite Mini Tour hosted the The Woodlands Panther Trails Mini Tour Championship at the prestigious Woodlands Resort & Conference Center on July 26 & 27.  Four mini tour players, three from the Houston area and one from the Austin area, teed it up in sunny and humid conditions in the pine trees of The Woodlands.  The lone girl in the event played from 5,007 yards, the boys 8-9 division played from 3,845 yards, and the boys 12-13 division played from 5,727 yards.  The mini tour players were greeted on day one with tournament gifts that included golf balls, a cap, and nice workout shirt.  They teed off on the first day behind the big tour, and this caused some problems with weather.  After the players completed their twelfth hole, play was halted the first time for lightning.  After a short delay, players resumed play for one hole and were delayed a second time for lightning.  After resuming play for the third time, players were finally forced off the course due to a huge line of thunderstorms that rolled through the area.  Rather than cancel the first round, it was decided that front nine scores would count for day one.  Montgomery native Hailee Cooper, playing in the girls 10-11 division, opened her front nine with a 43.  In the boys 8-9 division, Jason Marsh from Cypress opened with a 49.  Both of these mini tour players will be playing at US Kids Junior Championship next week in North Carolina at the famous Pinehurst course.  The competition was stiff in the boys 12-13 divison.  Kennedy Grimes from Austin, TX, opened with a 41, while Cole Hammer, fresh off a long stint from tournament baseball, opened with a 43.

The Tribute and The Woodlands

The Texas Junior Golf Tour once again had a triple threat Monday and Tuesday.  In the Dallas area, the tour hosted the Galleria-Dallas Classic at the Tribute located in the Colony, Texas.  This course was designed after the home of golf, the famous St. Andrews course in Ireland, and what a treat it was for the young men and women to play this venue so soon after the British Open was hosted at St. Andrews this year.  In the Houston area, the tour hosted two events on the same course.  The Woodlands Resort & Conference Center played host to the Woodlands Panther Trails Junior Championship as well as the Elite Mini Tour’s The Woodlands Panther Trails Mini Tour Championship.  The story of each event was weather!  On the first day in the Woodlands, play was suspended twice, and then finally halted due to inclement weather that rolled through the area.  On day two, players pressed hard to finish the first round, and then played eighteen more holes as the weather hit again at about 1 pm.  The Dallas area was not immune to the inclement weather either.  Players were faced with about a two hour rain delay that made the first round last approximately seven hours.  The staff of high school golf coaches at each venue was able to help all players finish the events.

Texas Junior Mini Tour Masters

It was an historic event for the Elite Mini Tour at the Texas Junior
Mini Tour Masters held at the always fun Hyatt Hill Country Resort. For the
first time in the history of the mini tour, the field was comprised of all girls.
The young ladies played 36 holes of golf on the Creeks and Lakes courses
in normal Texas summer weather. The Girls 10-11 and 12-13 played 4,949
yards, while the Girls 8-9 played 3,875 yards. Each young lady was allowed
to have a caddy for the event and all did a good job with pace of play.

TJGT players make Golfweek’s Honor Roll

golfweek_players
Recent TJGT winners, Thomas Birdsey (Trophy Club, TX - Class of 2010) and Emily Collins (Colleyville, TX - Class of 2010), earn “Player of the Week” Honors from Golfweek.

One can argue that the only thing hotter than the Texas heat right now is Thomas Birdsey’s golf game. The recent high school graduate, who will be attending Kansas State in the fall, fired a sizzling 68 in the final round of the Allen Samuels Cowboys Jr. Championship to claim back-to-back TJGT titles. Birdsey also birdied his final hole on at the TPC Las Colinas (PGA Tour course and site of the HP Byron Nelson Championship) to win the TPC Four Seasons Invitational by one shot.

The Texas Heat can’t keep up with the TJGT! Once again it’s another TJGT Triple Play!

image
With all the events the TJGT puts on you have to have a big staff. This week the TJGT was at it again with multiple events across the state.
First up the Texas Junior Golf Tour hosted the Oakmont Junior Classic fittingly at Oakmont Country Club in Corinth, TX on June 28-29, 2010.  Oakmont was in great condition, and is a great venue for the juniors.  The older boys played 6,799 yards, while younger boys played 6,496, while all girls played 5,787 yards.  On Monday, the players were treated to a 2 pm shotgun start, which is both good and bad.  On the one hand, you get to sleep in, but on the other hand, you have to face the Texas heat!  All players were greeted by TJGT staff at registration with two sleeves of premium Nike golf balls.  The boys also received a nice workout shirt with the TJGT logo and a mesh cap, while the girls were awarded a workout shirt and shorts, also with the TJGT logo and the color of their choice.

Unfortunately, the weather on day one did not cooperate.  Approximately 9 holes into the event, a thunderstorm blew in and dumped a couple of inches of rain.  The players marked their location on the course, and the TJGT staff did a remarkable job getting all players off the course and out of harm’s way.  After a delay of approximately two hours, it was decided that play…

TJGT Alumni Dominate TGA’s Texas State Amateur

image
The field at the 101st Texas State Amateur was dominated by former TJGT alumni with former TJGT and Texas Tech All-American Chris Ward capturing championship honors.
From the moment Chris Ward teed off of his first hole on Thursday he had total control. From the time he completed his first round to his final putt on his 72nd hole, his name failed to be on top of the leader board for only one hole when Bryant Lach from The Woodlands took a one stroke lead with a birdie on the par 3, 8th hole (44th hole of the event) which Ward bogeyed.

One hole later, Ward took the lead again, but this time he wouldn’t relinquish it for the rest of the championship. Ward played near flawless golf as he cruised around the…
