The Trophy Club Mini Tour Championship kicked off the spring season for the Elite Mini Tour at the 36-hole facility at Trophy Club Golf Course. The mini tour played the Whitworth course both days. The first day players were treated to gifts from the TJGT that included two sleeves of premium golf balls from Nike as well as a Nike golf shirt. In all, the mini tour had 12 players tee it up for the thirty-six hole event. There were six girls that played in the event, a very good number! The Boys & Girls 12-13 played 5,410 yards; the Boys & Girls 10-11 played 4,210; and the Boys & Girls 8-9 played 3,415 yards. The second day the players were met with rainy conditions in the morning during the warm-up session. The rain held off for the most part except for a few little sprinkles scattered throughout the round. The damp air and cloudy conditions, along with a stiff north wind, kept the temperatures down in the mid fifties. Although the weather was cool, the play was not for 8-9 year old champion Jenson Rogenes. Jenson shot rounds in the 70’s each day to claim the title. Giving chase to Jenson was runner up Crosby Guercio who shot a smooth 74 in the second round to finish alone in second. The 74 was the low round of the day for all competitors, including the junior tour. Finishing in third was newcomer Hogan Jones. Hogan shot rounds of 89-91 to finish in third. In the girls 8-9 division, Hailey Jones made it a family affair by winning the title with rounds 94 each day. Hailey is still nursing a sore left wrist from an accident back in the fall, but this was a good way for her to start the spring season. Coming in second was six year old Melena Barrientos. That’s right folks, six years old! Melena shot 99-97 to take the runner up title. Her second round included a chip in for birdie on the par 5 fifth hole. Finishing in third was another newbie, Macy Fox. Macy has only been playing golf for six months, but managed to shoot a two day total of 236 to take the third place trophy. In the girls 10-11 division, Lindy Patterson and Libby Winans claim first and second respectively. The highlight of Libby’s round included a birdie on the treacherous par 4 sixth hole. The hazard in front of the green on six swallowed up a lot of errant approach shots…there’s a reason it is the hardest hole on the Whitworth course. Sydney Roberts wins the girls 12-13 division with some impressive play that included a 93 in the second round. The golf course played very long for these young ladies with the north wind and the wet conditions, but they did a great job of battling through the conditions. The boys 12-13 division included some of the best play overall by division. Jack Little claims yet another EMT trophy with impressive rounds of 81-79. Jack got off to a tough start the second round, but bounced back nicely with a one over par total on his back nine to record the only round in the seventies for the division. Finishing in second was Jorey Knutson with a two day total of 171. Jorey played pretty well the second round, but unfortunately the putts weren’t dropping for him. The third place winner was Thomas Winters. Thomas’ second round was much like Jorey’s, just couldn’t get the putts to go down.
What a great way to kick off Spring Break! Thirty six of holes of golf on the Whitworth course at Trophy Club. The greens were in excellent condition and rolling fast and smooth. Great golf gifts from Nike golf. And no school. Happy Spring Break to everyone…be sure to check out the website for upcoming mini tour events. Chances are we will be coming to your area soon…
