The TJGT Thanksgiving Junior Classic at TPC San Antonio was played November 26th-27th, 2011 on the TPC Canyons Course at the beautiful JW Marriot Resort. Over 100 players teed it up on the PGA Tour venue in front of coaches from UTSA, Incarnate Word, and Stephen F. Austin.
All Boys 12-18 played 6,622 yards and all Girls 12-18 played 5,609 yards in this 36-hole, Golfweek-ranked event.
Day One was wet and windy as San Antonio received more than an inch of rain in the early morning pushing back the start of the round almost two hours. The winds blew 25mph with gusts up to 40mph. The TPC Canyons course was in great shape, but played extremely tough on both days. Day Two saw much colder temperatures as the thermometer dropped to 36 degrees with winds ranging from 30 – 45 mph with gusts up over 50 mph.
College coaches love seeing how junior golfers handle these sort of conditions as they mimic closely what players will be facing in collegiate golf.
If playing a PGA Tour course wasn’t enough, it’s hard to beat what the JW Marriot has to offer a family.
Resort amenities abound, including a world-class spa featuring a pool and fitness center; a variety of formal and casual dining options; and a multitude of banquet and meeting facilities, ranging from elegant ballrooms and intimate meeting rooms to lounges, outdoor verandas and gardens.
Added value should be the TJGT’s middle name and they always go above and beyond and the Elite Family Health, Nutrition & Fitness Seminar held on Saturday after the round was no different.
Dr. Jay Mahoney and Char Gahagan presented a very informative health, nutrition and fitness seminar for all families attending the Thanksgiving Major. Dr. Jay is one of the nation’s leading experts on family/youth health and performance nutrition and helps elite athletes on a monthly basis. Char Gahagan was a strength & conditioning coach on USC & Washington’s football staff and has trained athletes such as Reggie Bush, Troy Palamalu & Clay Matthews while winning national powerlifting championships as a college athlete. Char & Jay shared valuable information for families and players that will surely help them to excel to new heights and STAY HEALTHY. Whether it’s peak performance on the golf course or eliminating missed school days, Dr. Jay and Char will impact your life.
The next TJGT Invitational is the Traditions Fall Invitational at the Traditions at Texas A&M golf course in College Stations on December 10th-11th.
