The TJGT Kingwood Lake Junior Championship was played at the Kingwood Country Club Lake Course on January 16th-17th 2009. Players from Texas, Louisiana, and Kansas teed it up on Saturday in typical chilly and wet Houston weather and on Sunday sunny, 63* temperatures after a cold start. Golf coaches from the University of Houston and Houston Baptist saw the Boys 16-18 play 6,100 yards; the Boys 12-15 play 5,600 yards; and all Girls 12-18 play 4,900 yards on a course that was shortened to a par-69 due to three unplayable fairways.
After a long stretch of extreme cold, the TJGT was able to resume play in Houston. This was in part due to Juan Espiga and his 2nd round 66 on the Lake course at Kingwood CC. Juan’s two day total of 137 was more than enough to bring the temperatures up, and put down any challenge made by his competitors. Juan finished in 1st place by five strokes in a very solid boys 16-18 field.
John Krapf of The Woodlands was able to fend of challenges by Stephen Chambers and Andrew Scamardo in the Boys 12-15 division. His two day score of 150 was a strong effort under extremely soggy conditions.
In the Girls 16-18 division, Katelyn McDougal of Richmond bested her Lamar Consolidated HS teammate Ryanne Haddow by four strokes as she continued her winning ways.
Raquel Trevino of Pasedena put up two quality rounds of 82 and 83 to finish in 1st in the girls 12-15 division. Meaghan Coleman showed continued improvement as she takes home the 2nd place finish.
Special consideration should be noted for all competitors who played the soggy event with a great pace of play. Every group played in less than four hours on Sunday, which made plenty of Dads happy as they were able to catch a bit of playoff football back at home.
