The Texas Junior Golf Tour played host to the DFW Mini Tour Championship at Bear Creek Golf Club in Dallas on October 22-23, 2011. Eighteen players from Texas and Arkansas representing six divisions of play teed it up in some great fall weather. The Boys 12-13 division played 5,815 yards, the Boys 10-11 division, the Girls 10-11 division, and the Girls 12-13 division played 5,570 yards, while the Boys 8-9 division played 3,750 yards. All players played the West Course at Bear Creek.
On day one players were greeted at check in with two sleeves of Titleist ProV1 golf balls, a shirt of their choice, a lanyard, a beanie with TJGT logo, and a wristband. The mini tour played alongside the Junior Tour with a 1:30 shotgun start. The weather was Fall type weather with temperatures in the mid 80’s and slightly breezy. Bear Creek definitely showed its teeth in round one as most of the field struggled with the length, tight fairways, elevation changes, and hard greens. Noah Goodwin in the Boys 12-13 division was the lone player to break 80 on the first day with an opening round 77. This was a tightly tested division as Patrick Hervey and Fisher Vollendorf both shot opening round 83’s while Connor Caldwell was just one stroke back of those guys at 84. Goodwin shot a very steady 39-38, which included two birdies on the back nine. Hervey got off to a quick start with his starting assignment on hole 14. He was even par coming off of 18 with a birdie on the long par 5 fifteenth hole. In the Boys 10-11 division, Luke Dossey and Scott Roden found themselves tied after the first round with scores of 90, while Hogan Jones and Joseph Jones (no relation) shot 95 and 96 respectively. In the Boys 8-9 division, newcomer Matthew Griggs got off to a great start with an opening round 82. His opening round was good enough to take the lead by one over Rohit Madireddi. Kennedy Swann represented the lone girl in the Girls 12-13, but competed with the Girls 10-11 division. Kennedy opened with a first round 89. In the Girls 10-11 division, Hailey Jones opened with an 80 to take a four stroke lead over Kaylee Vesely. Rebecca Reed opened with a 93, while newcomer Madison Miller opened with a 111. In the Girls 8-9 division, Sky Sudberry shot 89 in round one. Gabbi Betancourt opened with a 93, and Morgan Miller opened with a 104.
Overnight a thunderstorm blew through the area soaking the course with over one inch of rain. Due to the overnight rains players were forced to play lift, clean, and place for round two. Overall scores were much better in round two, especially for Hailey Jones in the Girls 10-11. Hailey fired a very impressive round two of one under 71. Hailey had five birdies on her round, including back to back birdies on holes two and three, two of the most difficult holes on the course. She shot even par on the front nine, and one under on the back nine. Her seven over total for thirty six holes was definitely good enough for her to secure the finish. Finishing in second was Kaylee Vesely shot a second consecutive 84. Rebecca Reed finished third with a second round 95. In the Girls 8-9 division, Sky Sudberry shot another 89 in round two. Her two day total of 178 was good enough to secure the victory over Gabbi Betancourt by three strokes. Gabbi came back and had the low round in her division with an 88, but it wasn’t enough to catch Sky. Morgan Miller shot another 104 to finish in third. Kennedy Swann won the Girls 12-13 division with a second round 90. The Boys 12-13 divison picked up right where they left off on day one. Noah Goodwin shot a second round 82 to win the title by five strokes over Connor Caldwell. Connor came back on day two with the low round in the Boys 12-13 division with an 80. Finishing tied for third place were Patrick Hervey and Fisher Vollendorf, who each shot 83-84. Due to travel, Fisher had to get on the road back to Arkansas and there was no playoff. In the Boys 10-11 division, first round co-leaders Luke Dossey and Scott Roden battled it out to the bitter end with Dossey pulling it out by two strokes over Roden. Dossey fired a very impressive 85 in round two, while Roden shot an 87. Hogan Jones shot a final round 91 to finish third ahead of Joseph Jones. In the Boys 8-9 division, Matthew Griggs got after it in round two with a 78 to win by six strokes over Rohit Madireddi. Rohit played very consistent with a second consecutive 83 in round two.
The tour would like to thank all of the parents and caddies for getting the kids around the golf course. I also have to say that the mini tour kids are the best dressed kids. There are several good candidates for the best dressed award at the Tour Championship in February. The next mini tour event will be the Thanksgiving Mini Tour Championship in San Antonio at TPC San Antonio. The mini tour will play Canyon Springs on Saturday and then the Oaks course at TPC San Antonio on Saturday. Hope you choose to spend your Thanksgiving holidays with us in San Antonio.
