Dave Jones Biography

image
Left to right: Dave, Lisa, Josh 22, Sara 20, Matthew 18, Johnny 16, Joseph 11.

Personal: Dave graduated high school in southern Illinois in 1979 as a four sport All-State standout in High School. Dave’s Texas roots are with his Texas born mother and wife Lisa being a 1985 University of Texas graduate. He was heavily recruited to play football and baseball.  He chose Coach Bill Parcel’s Air Force Academy Falcons in 1979 over Harvard, Navy, Army & Univ. of Illinois. Dave’s desire to serve his country and fly jets has been a motivating factor in all his endeavors.  Dave graduated from the Academy in 1983 and experienced the highest levels of performance in college athletics while a member of the Football Falcons and observing the large Air Force Sports Program & Olympic training center in Colorado Springs.

In 1983, Dave attended Air Force Pilot Training at Laughlin AFB, Del Rio, Texas and finished in the top 10% of his class. He was selected to fly the F-4 Phantom fighter. After his F-4 training at Bergstrom AFB, Austin Tx he spent three years flying in the Far East. (Japan, Korea, Philippines) Dave was selected as his squadron’s top F-4 pilot and awarded an F-16C fighter assignment in South Carolina.  He earned several “Top Gun” awards as well as multiple air medals in his military flying career. In August 1990, Dave’s F-16 squadron was called into action in the 1990 Desert Shield/Storm Conflict.  His squadron was the first to leave the USA after the invasion of Kuwait and Dave served honorably as a Flight Commander and Instructor Pilot.  He logged over 2000 hours of Air Force Fighter time. Dave returned from Operation Desert Shield/Storm and transitioned to commercial aviation in 1991. Dave currently holds ratings with American Airlines on the MD-80, B-727, F-100, B-757-767 and B- 777.  Dave’s love for junior golf drove him to attend several USGA Rules Seminars and has served as a rules official for High School, TJGT and AJGA events.  His past Air Force & business experience has allowed him to direct the Texas Jr. Golf Tour’s operations for the past eleven years. Under his leadership, the TJGT has become the foremost regional tour in the USA.  TJGT recently launched the Texas Collegiate Amateur Tour to give collegiate and elite juniors competitive opportunities to play premium golf courses around their summer work & intern schedules. The relationship with AJGA, Golfweek and the College Golf Coaches Association (GCCA) as well as TJGT’s College Bound Membership Program has been invaluable to over 3,500 members obtaining college scholarships in the tour’s eleven year history. The past three seasons, the tour’s senior scholarship success rate for either academic or golf has exceeded over 85% for boys and 92% for girls. This success is the result of the passion to inform and educate every member family on the many opportunities around the country for academic and golf scholarships.  Additionally, Dave has championed the cause of promoting High School Golf and produced the first ever dedicated High School Golf website (Highschoolgolfscoreboard.com) to list tournament results, rosters and player rankings.  TJGT is endorsed by the Texas High School golf Coaches Association (THSGCA) and Texas University Interscholastic League. (UIL) Dave and the TJGT staff work closely with the Texas UIL to promote Texas High School golf. Highschoolgolfscoreboard.com and the TJGT accomplish the daunting task of live scoring thru Golfstat all Texas UIL State Championship Tournaments.  Live scoring has produced over 1 million page views during the state championship week.  This has created the most exposure for Texas high school golf in its long history.  Currently, over 40 high school golf coaches serve on TJGT’s tournament staff.  Additionally the TJGT has developed a radio podcast & HD Video site, College Bound Membership program, Elite Mini-Tour for ages 8-13, dynamic website & international alliance of junior tours worldwide to enhance national exposure for members.  The tour has grown from 6 events to over 85 across and seen annual membership grow from 100 to over 1300 members attracting players from almost all 50 states and several countries such as Mexico, Venezuela, Korea, Canada, Scotland and China. The tour has produced several NCAA, NJCAA & NAIA national champions, US Amateur & Junior champions as well as numerous golf & academic All-Americans and Nationwide, PGA & LPGA tournament winners.

Family: Dave has been married to Elizabeth “Lisa” Jones for 26 years.  Lisa is a 1985 University of Texas graduate majoring in secondary education. Dave & Lisa are the proud parents of five children, all whom are junior & collegiate golfers. Joshua (22) , Sara (20), Matthew (18), Johnny (16), Joseph (11).  Joshua, a three time AJGA All-American and Canon Cup member spent two years as a member of the 2008 & 2009 LSU Tigers Golf Team and transferred to the Univ. of North Texas and currently plays for the Mean Green Golf Team and selected amateur events.  Sara, is a sophomore on the Stephen F Austin Golf Team and was recently awarded Academic All-American honors with a 3.95 GPA in English/Spanish.  Matthew and Johnny are attending the Byron Nelson High School in Trophy Club, Tx. Matthew is the starting outside linebacker for the 4A Byron Nelson Bobcats. Matt earned 1st Team All-District Honors as well as the Team Defensive MVP and Team Captain Award. He continues to play golf on the TJGT and High School Golf Teams and competes on the power lifting team. He plans on playing football at the collegiate level at one of the military academies. Johnny, is a freshman at Byron Nelson and has had much success on the TJGT events.  Joseph continues to excel in school and a popular member of the TJGT Elite Mini-Tour.  Dave & Lisa are veterans of all levels of junior golf.  They have navigated their own children from the developmental stages to the highest levels of the AJGA & USGA events as well as the college recruiting process.  The are active members of Denton Bible Church and involved with several ministries including College Golf Fellowship and Denton Bible Inner City Ministry.

Dave’s Vision for TJGT: TJGT has set itself apart from the "golf establishment" by thinking outside the box.  Dave refers to the TJGT as the "Southwest Airlines" of junior golf. Dave knows that too many historic golf organizations are bogged down in internal politics and posses an entitlement mentality.  Dave’s vision of hard work and doing things differently that ultimately benefit the kids for college educations and not the organizations has served as his marching orders under his leadership.  For too many years parents & players traveled across the country and played tournaments that gained NO exposure to college coaches and wasted thousands of dollars.  Dave’s passion about bringing the best value in junior golf right here in Texas is evidenced in the leadership of the tour and its structure.  Dave has assembled parents of top level junior & collegiate golfers to serve on the Board of Directors and tournament staff while developing a regional tournament system to save parents travel expenses.  Dave is quoted as saying, "A person can be in the golf business for 30 years and really never understand the world of junior golf.  Until a parent/person has one of their own children navigate the system of elite junior golf, they will never fully understand how to navigate the system & counsel other parents & parents.  The AJGA Performance Based Entry system is very difficult to understand not to mention how to best strategize the AJGA system of tournaments. This is vital in planning a tournament schedule around a fixed budget to maximize collegiate coach exposure. This is why the TJGT leadership of parents of current & former AJGA, TJGT and college golfers is essential in future decisions for the tour as well as providing counsel and current information for TJGT members." Dave’s staff of former college coaches & current High School Golf coaches also provide excellent leadership to TJGT members and provide another "built in" value of why TJGT is considered the tour to play in the Southwest.

The Texas Junior Golf Tour Inc. is a tax-exempt non-profit organization. All donations/gifts are tax deductible and great appreciated.  All donations & sponsorships go directly to supporting the kids of the TJGT.
